If you’re looking for someone to build your website or handle your SEO, the choices can feel endless. Freelancer or agency? Local or remote? Strategy-led or just flashy? Before you sign anything, here are five smart questions I always recommend asking. They’ll help you find someone who’s not just capable, but actually right for your business.

1. Who’s actually doing the work?

It’s common for agencies and even some freelancers to pass projects to others. Sometimes it’s a junior team. Sometimes it’s white-label partners. That’s not always a deal-breaker, but it’s something to know from the start.

What to ask: Will I be in touch directly with the person building my site or managing my SEO?

2. Do they understand your business, not just your brief?

Web design and SEO aren’t just tasks to tick off. They’re tools to move your business forward. A good partner will ask questions that go beyond colour palettes and keywords. They’ll want to understand your goals and challenges.

What to look for: If the conversation stays surface-level, you might not be getting a strategy at all. Just a service.

3. What happens after launch?

Some designers disappear the minute a site goes live. Others push you into maintenance packages you don’t need. Make sure you understand what happens next.

Good signs: You get training, clear handover, full access, and flexible support options. Not a surprise invoice six weeks later.

4. Is their pricing clear?

You should know what you’re paying for, what’s included, and what’s not. If it’s all vague packages and slick talk, ask for a breakdown in plain English.

Tip: Trust the people who explain things clearly. Not just the ones who sell confidently.

5. Do they actually care?

It sounds basic, but it matters. Some people are just churning through jobs. Others genuinely want to help your business succeed. You’ll usually know within a few minutes of talking to them.

What to trust: Real advice, thoughtful questions, and a willingness to say no when something’s not right for you.

Final thought

Choosing a web designer or SEO partner isn’t just about skills. It’s about trust, strategy, and working with someone who actually gives a damn. Whether you work with me or someone else, I hope these questions help you choose well.
